A lot of my followers on here are new to the acting game or between reps at the moment. And the push to have the perfect team and strike while the iron is hot (aka during episodic season) is almost unbearable.
The feeling of missing out on potential roles or opportunities is devastating, trust. I know.
This is why your mental health is crucial to your survival through this time until you get with your next team member. Because if you spend the rest of 2022 frustrated as f*ck and annoyed at anyone who seems to ‘have exactly what you want‘ then you will take that vibe along with you into your future meetings (you can trust me on that one too).
And listen, I think you get some down-days. Have a good shower or bathroom floor cry. Hate this business and tell yourself you may quit. Sure. Take that time to feel the feelings.
But when a great deal of you realize you aren’t going anywhere any time soon, there are absolutely things you can do:
Instead of wasting a sh*t-ton of time getting swept up on the comparison streak of an IG or TikTok feed, mute people. Seriously. Stop taking in other people’s success if you’re not going to be their cheerleader. It’s self-preservation for you both. Just mute and chill.
Make your own list of goals that are not based on someone else’s timeline. We make these in Patreon quarterly, but you can do them anytime! Set your own bar. Achieving the things you are working towards gives you mental snacks to keep going.
Start getting real about the reps you do want one day. This can be as simple as a journal exercise or something you chat about with your actor-admin group. Knowing who/what you’re looking for and the types of values you want to have in common is going to set you up for future success.
And I know some of my Type-A actors are out there thinking ya, ya, ok but like can we get to the homework here? So stick around cause you know I love a good checklist.
If this mentality series has been helpful for you, I highly suggest you check out the Working Actor Workshop, where we work on building the mentality and life of a working actor. And this is the last planned class of 2023 btw!
