If you read this past post about the busy season there is a chance you thought, “LOL SAM. That’s not me right now. Thanks anyway…” and listen, your girl gets it ok? I have been there…..tbd maybe I am there right now!
You may be absorbing tons of content about how ‘busy it is right now’ and wondering…where the fuck are your auditions then?
You have reps and you have things in a decent place (more tangible tips to come) so what gives?
Listen, there are a lot of reasons why you may or may not be getting opportunities right now. But in terms of mental work, this is where you have to flex the big guns. I actually think this is the hardest when you have a solid team and still feel like you are being told not you.
The ramifications of this on your brain are massive. So you have to do a lot of homework here.
If you journal, this is a good time to do some extra writing. And (this is the kicker) look back on previous years and see what was working, and NOT just with acting. What was your day-to-day life? Are there things you left behind that you could pick up again? And if you’re like um, Sam, this has nothing to do with my audition numbers!…. I kinda think it’s bigger than that.
Building longevity in this career is THE focus of our work. So having the ability to clock & reflect on good AND bad times from a step outside of them is major. Of course yes, you should have a convo with your reps about what/how to deal with this long-term, but in the meantime, you have to take steps to mentally remove yourself from the comparison game that is undoubtidly going on in your head.
PS: still don’t feel seen here? Stay tuned. We’re chatting about un-repped actors shortly. Promise.
Thanks for this reminder! This has definitely been a vital part of my journey, especially now. I’m taking this low time to focus on my, my physical and mental health, and reconnect to the things that I thoroughly enjoy outside of acting. It definitely takes some practice, especially when you want something so badly, but I’m learning to make me a bigger priority than my acting career and it helps me to shine in my acting career <3
