Remember when I posted about my schedule and got shamed for it heavily (by non-actors)?
I acted cool about it but I had to work REALLY hard to overcome people judging the use of my time. Of course, these trolls have no idea what is often required of actors on a 4-hour notice. How would they know that the way we take care of ourselves can make or break our employment, and yea… it makes sense that on paper, they may be jealous of perceived “free time”.
So, with hesitation, I am filming some vlogs about my “routine” for the YouTube channel. But in the meantime, I will share my current AM vibe (on the days I can make it happen…80% of the time let’s say):
Dogs:
They take up SO much of my day. Having three dogs is so fun but also exhausting. I get up with them at 6 am (Caleb is often already at work) and take them for a walk and do the breakfast route. They’re also on a lot of medications so…it takes a bit. I am up by 6 am almost every day.
Get Quiet:
I say this instead of “meditate” because sometimes I do a classic Headspace for 10 minutes, sometimes it’s doing “To Be Magnetic” for 20 minutes or more, and sometimes I do some breath work for 5 minutes. Every once in a while, I take a deep breath and get on TikTok. The point is that I have kindergarten-style quiet time alone. So I don’t get mad at people for no reason all day long…something I was prone to do in High School when we learned I wasn’t “a morning person”. While I am being quiet, I consume…
Lemon + Salt Water:
Next to “How Do I Get an Agent?” this is my most asked-about topic. I drink 40oz of salt and lemon water during my quiet time. For the epic reason that *dramatic pause* I think it tastes good. Sure — maybe it has some other tiny tiny nutritional benefit — but mostly it tastes like a morning margarita and then I have drunk 40oz of water by 7 am.
Coffee + Write Things Down + Read:
I love my Me Time journal and use that (or just some empty pages) to get all the shit outta my brain and onto paper. Sometimes it’s IG captions, to-do lists, or funny reel ideas. Sometimes it’s musings about my fear of the business. Whatever it is, it’s gotta be free of my head. Sometimes I write 3 sentences as though I am going to write a novel and get distracted and walk away for the rest of the day.
I also love to read things for a bit. Sometimes that bit is 20 minutes, sometimes it’s 5. This is my favorite time of day to read something motivational like a time management or productivity book. When I finish quiet time and move on to writing and reading, I pour a big fucking glass of coffee. I have no coffee rituals; I just love it. Cold brew is my favorite because I drink one glass instead of 5. Also, it’s easy. We make our own cold brew with these pitchers and it’s SO good with some milk (I vacillate between oat and almond, based on what’s on sale.) And no — I don’t add collagen or special things to it (at least right now) as I never saw benefits from those expensive things…to each their own!
Workout:
And after my quiet chill time, I always move. This is yet another thing I insist on making time for as I feel it highly impacts my casting if I am being honest. I have a lot of images in my casting pages that show me in fitness attire and showcasing my body, so I feel the need to back them up (as I am often called to audition in those clothes for very fast turnaround gigs). Caleb programs for me 3x strength workouts a week and the other 3 days I do Peloton cardio classes — usually 1 or 2 of those involve sprinting. I wrap this all up by 9 am and then take my dogs for a half-mile walk. If I am super sore or didn’t sleep well, I will opt for walking a few miles instead of training. And yes, sometimes I have to skip all of this due to unforeseen circumstances or because I don’t feel up to it. But I will be honest that those days are rare. I have been a big fitness fan ever since I was in college so it feels like brushing my teeth — an essential part of my day that feels weird if I miss it. This is all usually wrapped by 9am, then I take my dogs for a long walk, shower, eat something with protein in it, and start work by 10am.
Do we like this attention to detail??
So that’s my ideal morning. I don’t have kids. I work from home and make my own schedule. I am still often interrupted by a booking, travel, unforeseen events, or circumstances. But I try to accommodate an abridged version of this when that does happen. And in a world of chaos and uncontrollable outcomes, having this little structure to lean on has been immensely helpful.
